Epic Race Sees BMW, Jeep, Mercedes, And Land Rover Battling It Out
This drag race between SUVs featuring an X7 M50, a Wrangler, an AMG G63, and a Defender ends with the most surprising results.
Matt Watson and his CarWow team are perhaps the best at high-performance car drag races on YouTube. They always manage to bring together some epic machines, and always put on a great show for us.
This latest video is no exception as he brings together the Land Rover Defender V8, Jeep Wrangler 392, Mercedes-AMG G63 and BMW X7 M50 for a high-performance SUV drag race with some of the best of the type currently on the market.
The Four Epic SUVs Compared
The four cars are all very hardcore. Except the BMW.
The Defender V8 has a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine with 525 hp. The G-Wagen meanwhile has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 585 hp and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Wrangler 392 has a mighty 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine with 470 hp, and it’s a little lighter than the G-Wagen and the Defender. The X7 M50 has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 530 hp, so plenty of power in there.
The first drag race gets underway, and all four cars get off the line well but amazingly, the BMW gets the holeshot along with the G-Wagen, and incredibly it wins the first race!
Hardcore Doesn’t Necessarily Mean The Best
That first race showed that sometimes a bit of luxury is all you need, the X7 launching very well thanks to its launch control.
Time for another drag race, and once again it is the G-Wagen and the X7 that get the better start. Watson is then left fighting the Wrangler and does get past, but the BMW once again wins. A third race does not change the outcome, with the BMW edging out the Mercedes again.
Rolling Races And The Braking Test
Now it’s onto the rolling races and the brake test. The first rolling race has the cars in their comfort modes and automatic gear settings.
The Defender V8 just bogs right down, but the G-Wagen shoots off into the distance and easily wins the 1/2-mile race, but the BMW wins at the mile. The second rolling race has the cars in sporty settings and locked into third at the start. But once again it is AMG vs BMW, and this time the BMW wins at both the 1/2 mile and the mile itself. Finally, it is the braking test. And the BMW wins again!
That is a clean sweep for the X7, and you can’t help but be very impressed by that. The Defender and Wrangler were by far the worst of the quartet, while the G63 did give the X7 a run for its money.
But it isn’t really a true off-roader, so maybe an off-road challenge would see a different outcome.
