The song “Driver’s Seat” would be British pop band Sniff ‘n’ the Tears biggest hit. Released in 1978, the tune would chart in several countries, and would provide period top-40-radio listeners with a needed reprieve from the disco music which then dominated the airwaves.
I don’t remember Sniff ‘n’ the Tears, but I sort of remember “Driver’s Seat.” Great tune. Because of its placement in a ad campaign, I was reminded of the song recently, though the only lyric I could make out was, “A little driving on a Saturday night.”
Hearing the song again, I was given to a bout of nostalgia, and longed to be back in high school driving around my home town of Palatine, Illinois, sometime after midnight. Maybe I heard “Driver’s Seat” come over the Delco radio in my Pontiac Ventura at some point back then, who’s to say?
Anyway, as tribute to those nighttime drives, I have gathered up a collection of old print ads featuring cars at night. Some of these ads are pretty great looking; I especially like the Dodge Charger piece. Which do you like best? You can tell us by leaving a note down below.
